A bunch of LLM Entrance exams include a subjective (essay answer) to test a candidate’s expression and writing ability. It is important to acquire necessary writing skills to score well in any exam that tests your writing skills. Not only is it important for getting a good score, but it also gives you an edge over other candidates. Essay Answer writing is an art. This article will discuss what an examiner looks for in an essay answer, what a good scoring answer should have and how you can prepare for it. Let’s discuss a few pointers that make up for a good, scoring essay answer.

  • HAVE A STRUCTURE

An answer should have a structure that makes it easier for the examiner to find what she is looking for in an answer. Writing lengthy paragraphs without proper breaks and punctuation makes it hard for the examiner to focus and increases the chances of your substantial portion of the answer being lost in those long sentences. It’s advisable to have a structure that allows your answer to be divided into simple, understandable parts. A structured answer is easy on the eyes and leaves little scope for forgetting some essential part of your answer.

You should always begin with a short paragraph of Introduction, discussing what all ground you would be covering in your answer. It should be short and must incorporate the headings of your answer. It can act as a sort of hypothesis that you go on to prove in your conclusion.

After the Introduction, you should come to the main body of your essay answer. You should divide this part into sub-headings according to the requirements of the answer. For eg., it could have the following headings- Background/History, Important Legal Provisions, Landmark Judicial Pronouncements, Recent developments etc.

The idea is to break down your answer into sub-parts with clear headings. Lastly, write the Conclusion. It need not be more that 4-5 lines. Concluding your answer gives your answer a perfect presentable structure.

  • DO NOT BEAT AROUND THE BUSH

A good answer is not about the quantity, but quality. Do not focus on the length of your answer as long as it answers the question sufficiently. Be well within the word limit prescribed. Enrich your answer with quality.

  • STAY UPDATED

There is always a lot happening in the legal world. Keep an eye out for all the recent developments and use them in your answer. Substantiating your answer with recent development shows the examiner that you have prepared and gives you an edge over other candidates.

  • UNDERLINE AND HIGHLIGHT

Presentation is one very important, but overlooked aspect while writing an answer. The essay answer must obviously have substance, but it should also be presentable. An examiner checks a lot of scripts in a short duration of time. It is natural to miss an important point in your answer. It is always advised to highlight or underline the important parts of your answer to avoid it being overlooked.

  • TAKE 2 MINUTES TO FRAME

Before beginning to write your essay answer, take 2 minutes to frame your points. Write down the important heads that you want to cover in your answer. It helps in exams where time is of essence and a candidate is under a lot of pressure. It usually happens that one is in dearth of time and forgets to write some important bits. Having a pre-prepared structure would help in remembering all the points even if you are able to write only two lines on each. This technique helps you cover all the important heads even under the time constraint and pressure.

  • KEEP YOUR CONCEPTS SIMPLE AND CLEAR

Given the vast syllabus of LLM Entrance Exams, it becomes really hard to predict the subjective portion. One thing that needs to be remembered is that they always test a candidate on broad concepts. The questions are rarely about a particular section or a particular judgement. Therefore, while preparing, be mindful of the concepts. Understanding concepts is important to write a better answer even if you don’t know specific provisions. You should be able to present a holistic picture of your concept even if you don’t know the exact Section number. The concept has more importance than mugging up all provision numbers. It is an additional benefit if you are able to substantiate your answer with specifics, but even without it, you can write a good answer as long as you are conceptually clear.

  • DO NOT WRITE UNNECESSARY DETAILS

Do not write details that are unconnected to the question asked. Always focus on what the answer demands. Additional information gets you points only if it connected to what has been asked. Do not flaunt by incorporating technicalities that are unwarranted.

  • ANSWER ALL THE SUB-PARTS

A question may consist of 2-3 parts in a single line. Remember to answer all the sub-parts separately. Divide your answer into heads according to the number of sub-parts asked. Remember to compartmentalize all your sub-parts to impress the examiner.

A subjective portion can change your destiny in an exam. It can substantially increase or decrease your score despite scoring the same as your competitors in the Objective Portion. It sometimes becomes the decisive part of your score. Be mindful of the above pointers to write a good and scoring answer.
