The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was approved by the MHRD and launched by the Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development on 29th September 2015. This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology draws from the overall recommendations and broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions.

The following categories exist:

  • Overall
  • Universities
  • Colleges
  • Research Institutions
  • Engineering
  • Management
  • Pharmacy
  • Medical
  • Dental
  • Law
  • Architecture and Planning
  • Agriculture and Allied Sector
  • Innovation

The parameters broadly cover

  • Teaching, Learning, and Resources
  • Research and Professional Practices
  • Graduation Outcomes
  • Outreach and Inclusivity
  • Perception

Top 5 NIRF Law Ranking 2023:

  • NLSIU Bangalore
  • NLU Delhi
  • NALSAR Hyderabad
  • WBNUJS Kolkata
  • Jamia Millia Islamia

Apart from these, there are other Law Universities which include private universities as well as traditional universities. Out of 25 National Law Universities, only 11 NLUs participated in the NIRF Ranking 2023 and made it to top 30 law universities in NIRF Ranking

What does this mean for LLM Aspirant:

  • Take the rankings with a pinch of salt
  • As a prospective student of law (whether LL.B or LL.M), do not decide your college based on the rankings
  • The parameters of ranking may not align with what you should look for in your graduation from college.
  • For pursuing LL.M in India, factors like specialisations offered, faculty, quality of students, alumni, placements, etc. are far more important than NIRF Rankings.
